Rachael's Fragments
In the nearly 10 years I have worked with text, I have not undertaken a true collaboration with any author, so when my wife defiantly asked why I never used her poetry, I could only answer that I didn’t want the responsibility of maintaining the carefully crafted balance of her language in my drawing.
She responded by supplying short fragments that could just as easily sit on the surface as be buried under layers of pigment and epoxy. She provided fragments suitable as either architecture or archeology, fitting perfectly within my process.

What satisfies me about writing poetry is that it transforms my suffering into art. My longing to be perfect is a kind of suffering. I once tried to write a poem about it. It failed. I gave lines from the poem to my husband, so that he could destroy them, and together we could make something beautiful.
